Patients worry about many things throughout their peri operative journey, of which we as nurses endeavour to make the journey as smooth as possible.
Pain is one thing patients most worry about, so having a good understanding of Acute pain and management of pain is a must in the perioperative unit.
This presentation will provide a brief overview of pain , assessment , and treatments that can be used to reduce pain while in PACU.


Johanna is a past chair of the Peri Operative  Nurses College of New Zealand. After graduating from Whitirea Polytechnic , Porirua, Wellington in 1991 Johanna worked in many area to build a solid nursing foundation. She worked in a general surgical ward in Tan Tock Seng , Singapore, an ORL ward, Greenlane Auckland, Vascular Radiology Greenlane, CardiacIntensive care and general intensive cares before taking up a position in PACU at Counties Manukau. Johanna currently works for the ministry of health. She holds a masters in nursing completing a dissitation on Malignant Hyperthermia.
She is an active member of the Auckland Northland PNC committee and a member of the professional practice committee PNC.
