About the Commission
The Health Quality & Safety Commission is Aotearoa New Zealand’s only focused national quality and safety agency working with clinicians, providers and consumers to provide safe, equitable, high-quality health and disability services.
We gather, analyse and report on data and information from across the health and disability system, detailing the equity, quality and safety of services. We partner with change makers to improve health services.
From aged residential care, to GP practices and primary care, to operating theatres and hospitals, to DHBs, we guide practice and change in ways that are measurable and reportable.
The Commission is also the health sector’s central trusted hub for sharing and understanding data and experiences, and improving care together.
For the Aotearoa New Zealand health and disability system, our work means greater health equity, fewer people harmed, more lives saved, and financial savings that can be reapplied to care for New Zealanders.

MERCY SHIPS – the hospital ship charity
New Zealander volunteers have quietly gone about providing free, essential surgery for people in developing nations with the international hospital ship charity Mercy Ships, for 40 years.
The not-for-profit’s mission is to alleviate the impact of accidental trauma, birth complications and the lack of surgical intervention for amenable disease which can cause life-long disability or death.
According to the World Health Organisation, lack of access to safe surgery in developing nations causes more deaths annually worldwide than HIV, TBs and malaria combined.
Mercy Ships operates the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, Africa Mercy. From this transportable healthcare platform, volunteers from New Zealand and around the world offer six surgical specialities, dental care and medical capacity-building programmes. Mercy Ships makes access to safe surgery a reality for people in extreme poverty, and helps upskill local medical professionals. All services are delivered without charge, during ten-month field services in West Africa.
Soon to double the free surgical services offered, Mercy Ships needs YOU – Kiwi theatre, ICU/PICU and paediatric nurses to volunteer for the professional adventure of a lifetime. – bringing transformational healthcare to some of Africa’s poorest people.

Southern Cross Healthcare is an integral part of New Zealand’s wider healthcare system. We changed our name from Southern Cross Hospitals during 2020, reflecting the fact that caring for the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders now extends beyond our hospitals. Of course, those modern surgical hospitals and specialist centres remain at the heart of New Zealand’s largest independent healthcare network, offering access to advanced technologies and quality nursing care for medical specialists and their patients. In addition, working with our joint venture partners, our capabilities extend into physiotherapy and rehabilitation services, as well as evolving healthcare solutions for New Zealand workplaces.
As a not-for-profit organisation, we continue to look for ways to enhance and support the health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders. From the introduction of patient-focused, integrated services, through reinvesting in modern hospital facilities and developing our people, we are working to use our capabilities and resources to make quality healthcare more widely accessible.
